A group of Calgarian artists have self-published their own comic book anthology and will be celebrating its release with a book launch and artist talk.
The book is entitled WISHLESS: A GRAPHIC ANTHOLOGY and it asks the question: What if Pinocchio’s wish was never granted, and he never became a real boy? This idea is explored in a variety
of styles and genres by eight different cartoonists, most of whom graduated from the Alberta College of Art + Design. The book’s curator and publisher Nick Johnson explains the origin of the book: “Sho Uehara pitched this crazy idea of an immortal wooden boy roaming the planet forever, which totally kickstarted my imagination. It was the perfect theme to create an anthology of stories so I reached out to a group of local cartoonists that I admired, who all approach comics in a very unique way, and was
overjoyed to see that so many were interested.”
The publishing and distribution of the book is a completely independent effort. “I’ve been selfpublishing my own comics for years so it just seemed second nature to do the same for this book. I knew we would have no trouble finding an audience for it.” After a little bit of start up cash, the book started paying for its own print runs at local comic shows and is now ready to hit the shelves of local bookstores, as well as being available online through Comixology.
“The artist talk will be an amazing chance to connect with the public and reveal to Calgary what a vibrant and exciting comic community is thriving here,” Nick continues. “Plus Shelf Life is such a pillar of support for the local community, it’s the perfect place to host it.”
Contributing artists include Nicole Brunel, Jillian Fleck, Jackson Gee, Joanne Leung, Lyndon Navalta, Nick Johnson, Jarett Sitter, and Sho Uehara, most of whom will be at the event.
